Cognito Interview With Illuminati2G.com

Illuminati2g.com caught up with Cognito for an interview to discuss his upcoming Strange Music release, Automatic, amongst other things. Cognito discusses the perks of working with an independent label, what it’s like to work with Tech N9ne, the Automatic cover art, and the video for the first single “Outcast”. The interview ends with a shout out to the fans and his new family at Strange Music. From the sound of it, Cognito has found a home:

“I just want to shout out all the fans of Strange Music. Thanks for all the support, and I want to shout out the Strange Music family. They have all treated me as such and not even when I was signed to Master P have I felt this comfort level like I have with Strange. I know it will be the start of a long term relationship with the label and I am blessed and honored to be a part of it.”

Cognito Is Ready For Launch

The deal might be different but the fact is the same as it always was, Cognito is ready. Oakland rap legend Too Short once said to “Get In Where You Fit In,” a message to put yourself in a place where you belong. After ten years of persistent hustling in the California rap game, fellow Bay Area rapper Cognito has found himself a perfect fit in Strange Music, the most successful indie rap label in the world. With his Strange Music debut, Automatic, set to drop next week on April 20th and with a nationwide tour on the horizon, Cognito’s persistence has paid off, and the stage is set for him to take his career to the next level. The deal with Strange is no coincidence, for Cognito and his new home with a label that shares the same principles that have generated their respective success: tireless work ethic, a close and personal relationship with the fans, and above all, an unbridled passion to create great music.

This isn’t Cog’s first walk in the park. From the job he landed at 16 as a member of E-40′s street team, to having record deals with labels owned by Bay Area heavyweight Mike Mosley and rap star/entrepreneur Master P, to touring around the nation with Bay Area legend Andre Nickatina, Cognito is already a seasoned veteran of the scene as well as the music business. Though his previous deals were not the right fit, Cognito’s determination has never wavered. “I don’t regret any of the deals I’ve done,” he says, “I took what I could learn out of each one and applied it to get to the next step.” It was this hunger that quickly attracted D-Buck to Cognito’s wing, who left his position as A&R for Mike Mosley’s Steady Mobbin’ record label to push Cognito’s career. D-Buck shares his first encounter with Cog,

Cognito and D-Buck

“I had him hop in my car when I was doing promo work for Steady Mobbin’. He played some tracks for me. I didn’t really like the tracks, but I thought he was dope. I gave him five tracks and told him to write something to them, not expecting to hear from him in at least a week or two. Two days later he calls me and says he’s got all the songs done. I was like ‘damn…this dude is serious.’ I listened to the tracks and they were hot.”

Along the path of his hip-hop journey, Cognito caught the attention of the one and only Violet Brown, Urban Music buyer for Trans World, the largest music chain in the business. A heavyweight figure in the music business, she has rubbed shoulders with everyone in the rap game that you could imagine. “I listen to hip hop all day long as a buyer and I hear absolutely everything. When Cognito’s music came across my desk, I knew I had to know him, work with him and hear as much of his music as possible.” When Violet backs an artist, people listen. She gave what she heard to Travis O’Guin, Strange Music CEO, and the rest is history. Being that her favorite rapper is Tech N9ne, she’s excited as can be: “The Strange Music logo has become a major force in hip hop. They are selective about who they sign and I am glad, proud, and ecstatic that they have brought Cognito into their elite roster of artists.”

Strange Music is known for it’s grueling tours and for giving fans close access to the artists. Doing more than a 100 shows a year would be daunting for most newly signed artists to the label, but not Cognito. He’s been doing tours for years. During his stint under Master P’s Gutta Music label, Cognito had the pleasure and privilege of touring around the country with none other than Bay Area rap legend Andre Nickatina. During this time he did over 100 shows a year, building a name for himself on the underground scene. DJ Pause, who DJ’d for Nickatina and Cognito during the tour, was impressed right from the start. “I could tell that he’d been rocking the stage for awhile. He worked with the crowd, fed off the crowd, and even got me involved the first time I worked with him. He got me involved right off the bat.” Fans soon took notice as well. DJ Pause reflects: ”Put it this way: when he first asked me to start DJ’ing for him, it was in Idaho. When we went back the next year, his fanbase had doubled…at least. It was a trip.”

Being a label with a fan-first mentality has always been a staple of Strange Music’s way of doing business. V.I.P Packages, ustream broadcasts, twitters, forums, and a near-constant stream of shows and releases throughout the year have solidified Strange as a label set after the hearts of their fans. According to Cognito, this is right up his alley.

“The fans they have are real fans. Strange fans are real: they’re not built, made-up fans based off of one single because the label spent 10 million dollars trying to get radio or video play, and didn’t get real fans. Strange gained real fans. I’m a personal dude, I’m a personal artist. I like being personal with my fans, I like talking to my fans, I like hanging out with my fans, and that’s all Strange is about. They appreciate the fans as much as the fans appreciate them, and that’s something you usually don’t see in the music business.”

After a long journey through all the highs and lows that the music business has to offer, Cognito has finally found a home at Strange Music, and is as ready as ever to make a name for himself. Though success in this business is never certain, with an independent powerhouse like Strange Music by his side, the sky is the limit for Cognito.

Automatic is available in stores and on iTunes April 20th, 2010.

Cognito Performs At ‘Wake and Bake’ Show, Strange Music Fan Submits Rave Review Of Evening

Last Saturday night, April 10th, Cognito headlined the opening show for the Wake and Bake Tour. Playing for a small crowd at the Cafe Culture in Chico, California, Cognito did his thing and ripped it. Although the show was small, from the sounds of it, Cog is following the footsteps of fellow labelmate Tech N9ne in building his fanbase brick by brick. One fan in particular, Cole Payan, was there to share what he would describe as a night he would never forget. As it turns out, he ended up hanging with Cognito and his posse into the wee hours of the morning, and also got a sneak peak of Automatic, Cognito’s debut release from Strange Music set to drop on April 20th. Here’s his story…

Cognito is the fucking man! Automatic is hella legit!” – Posted by Cole Payan on TRTN forum

Alright I got a story for everyone about the Cognito show last night…

So Im at the show chillin outside with Cog before the show starts, talking about a bunch of stuff. Then he’s all like come to the car i gotta show you something (no homo). So we go to the car, and he shows me the Automatic CD case. So im like fucking sickk. Then he pops in the album and let me preview a few songs. THIS ALBUM IS FUCKING SICK. The tracks i got to hear were beyond legit, hella exceeded my expectations for the album. So then Cog did his thing on stage, performed like 5 songs in front of the huge crowd of like 7 people. The show was hella under-promoted and nothing like the rest of the shows on the tour apparently, but glad to see that Cognito still showed up and did his thing.

So then me, Cog, D-Buck, and his other buddy (cant remember his name) went searching around the streets of Chico for parties for a couple hours. Fucking hilarious, hollering out at hot chicks who walked by and shit lol. So were talking about random shit as were walking, got some info about some Strange Music related things. But we were all just hanging out so I didnt really wanna bombard him with questions lol. We ended up not really finding a party (it was a weak night in Chico), but it was sick as fuck to chill with these dudes and just hang out like Ive known them for years. All three of them are down to earth as hell, and just treated me like family. Hell, Cog even got me a hot dog and mountain dew from this cart downtown haha. Sucks that we couldnt really find a party to hit up and the left to drive back to the bay around 2 am. Definitely gonna remember this shit for a looooong time.

MY REVIEW OF THE TRACKS I GOT TO PREVIEW

Intro – Gives a build up to the first track, if you ever heard the intro to Fort Minor’s The Rising Tied its kind like that. Except Tech’s voice instead of Jay-Z

I’m Goin Crazy – Got to hear the first minute of it. This shit gave me chills. Hella sick beat, flow, solid track. Great opening to the album.

Pill Poppin Music – People have been hearing this song live and raving about it, and it is a hella sick track. Hook is tight, and Lynch destroys the last verse.

Violated – Everyone has heard the snippet of this, and Cog has been saying “just wait till you hear Tech’s verse”. So he fast forwarded to Tech’s part, and HOLY SHIT he was not kidding. tech absolutely rapes this track. he starts off sounding like something out of a Nine Inch Nail’s song, then just starts busting. Fucking insane.

Born 2 Be Fly – The second single that people should be hearing soon im guessing. And you can definitely tell why they chose this as the next single. Beat is sick as hell Cognito kills the first verse, and Kaliko and Tech both kill their parts of the song.

Everyone that pre-ordered this album is going to enjoy it, if the rest of the cd is as awesome as these first few tracks then this album will be getting hella spins.

Just had to share this with you all lol. 9 days til Automatic drops, get hyped!

Special thanks to Cole Payan for posting this review!

Cognito Appearance At Sacramento In-Store Signing

If you attended the in-store signing at Dimple Records Store in Sacramento, CA on March 29th or viewed the entire in-store signing during the live UStream broadcast, you probably saw your boy Cognito taking part in signing a few autographs for the fans.  During the North by Northwest Tour, the Strange Music crew stopped in the hometown of Brotha Lynch Hung to sign autographs for tons of fans and Strange Music heads. Along for the signing was Tech N9ne, Brotha Lynch Hung, Krizz Kaliko, Kutt Calhoun, Big Scoob.  C-lim also was present and as you can see from the photo. C-lim may have been just as surprised as we were to see Cognito making the appearance.  Practice makes perfect as Cognito gears up for several more in-store signings along with the rest of the Strange Music crew as they prepare for the Strange Days Tour.

Cognito’s Top Five Bay Area Hot Spots

Cognito shared with us his five favorite places to go in the Bay Area of California. Here’s what he had to say…

Joe's Buffet - Fairfield, CA

Joe’s Buffet (Fairfield, CA)
At Joe’s Buffet, they’re famous for their meats and sandwiches. Prepare for a lot of meat because they pile it on high at Joe’s.  A “family style” eatery open since 1949, they’re famous for their roast beef and pastrami sandwiches, as well as their au jus sauce.
Cognito says: “Best roast beef sandwiches in town.  I would go there at least once a week.”

Kinders Meat - Concord, CA

Kinder’s
(Concord, CA)

Formed in 1946 and relocated to Concord in 1985, this is THE place to get ball-tip and tri-tip marinated steak sandwiches. They also are famous for bbq sauces, rubs, marinades, rubs, and spices.
Cognito says: “Kinder’s is the  best place to buy meat in the Bay Area.”

Underdog Records - Pittsburg, CA

Underdog Records (Pittsburg, CA)

This is where you can find a lot of cds that are out from Bay Area rappers, as well as cool t-shirts and apparel.
Cognito says: “Underdog is the best mom & pop record store in the East Bay Area.”

Alioto's - San Francisco, CA

Alioto’s
(San Francisco, CA)

Famous not only for the food but also for the view alone, Alioto’s has been a staple of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf since 1925. Specializing in seafood and Italian, the restaurant is famous for it’s ciopinno. Family members have also gone on to become mayors and city counselors in San Francisco.
Cognito says: “Best Italian and seafood in San Francisco.”

Toons Nightclub - San Jose, CA

Toons Nightclub (San Jose, CA)

The club features many levels and rooms, sometimes even having live bands on certain days of the week. Featuring an eclectic crowd of everyone from rapheads to clubbers to rock and rollers, Toons is where you need to go to get down in San Jose.
“Toons is the Nightclub in San Jose that we go to NOT PERFORM but to hang out,” Cognito says.

Industry Shaker Violet Brown Speaks On Cognito, Strange Music

Photo: Violet Brown

Violet Brown has been a mover and shaker in the rap and r&b music business for over a decade now, rubbing elbows with just about anyone you could think of, from Snoop to Diddy to Dre to 50 and of course…Tech N9ne, her favorite rapper of them all. When Violet backs an artist, people pay attention. Given that Cognito’s debut Strange Music release, Automatic is due to be released on April 20th, we thought it would be a good idea to talk to the woman that originally brought his music to Strange and subsequently helped Cognito land a record deal to the most successful independent hip-hop label in the world.

SM: What is it that you do exactly, and what are some noteworthy moves you’ve made in your career?

VB: I am the Urban Music buyer for the TransWorld chain of stores. We are the largest music chain in the business. I came to TransWorld from The Wherehouse. I have been working in music over 35 years. Here are a few facts. I was a DJ for 26 years, managed artists worked as an A&R consultant for several labels, Executive Produced several albums. One of them was in Billboards Top 10. Produced a film. I was in The Source Magazine POWER 30 for 5 consecutive years. I won a Living Legends award through their foundation. I have been able to meet just about every important artist over the last 35 years. I even had a dinner with Nelson Mandella. I was very instrumental in the careers of numerous artists. I love helping new artists achieve their dreams. I have been very involved with so many artists through the years but the one that really will remain in my heart is TECH N9NE & now Cognito.

SM: What do you think about Cognito and his music?

VB: Cognito is one of the best lyricists out there. He is so dedicated to his craft. He is highly creative & hard working. I think his music is very current, clever and infectious. His flow and delivery will stand up to just about any MC in the game today. If you look at Strange Music’s roster of artists you will see that they are picky about who they sign. They look for unique and credible talent, and that is just what Cognito is all about. When you listen to his music you do not have to figure out what he is talking about. He is very direct and spits lyrics that most people can relate to. You can tell by his tracks that he is influenced by many genres of music. I listen to hip hop all day long as a buyer and I hear absolutely EVERYTHING. When Cognito’s music came across my desk, I knew I had to know him, work with him and hear as much of his music as possible. Just like Strange, I am also picky these days about the people I work with….WORKING WITH COGNITO WAS A NO-BRAINER. This is something I HAD TO DO. I am a HUGE fan of Cognito.

Cognito in the studio

SM: How did you guys meet?

VB: Cognito worked for the oldest and best indie distributor out of the Bay Area. I knew him as the guy that got the job done right when I needed help from that company. I could always depend on him. His work was incredible. Then one day he mentions that he is also a rapper. So naturally I wanted to hear his music, although I was a little scared because most of the time the music was just not great from so many others through the years. He sent me some of his music & I flipped out. I ran around from office to office in my building playing it for people. I could not believe that he dropped this gem on me. Needless to say, his disc went from my office, to the car and to my home and then traveled everywhere with me. I could not stop listening to him. His demo became a hit with myself and quite a few of my friends. It kind of reminded me of how I felt when I first heard Tech. My next step was calling Strange Music.

SM: What do you think are some features that set Cognito apart from the rest?

VB: Well, music is very personal for people and for my taste it is all in his music. Remember, I hear everything so if I can get the enjoyment out of a Cog disc that I get from some of the greatest rappers of today, I know he can stand up and really fit in the game. Although he is from the Bay, his music could be felt anywhere. He has a different style and sound from most of the Bay area rappers. He is definitely more clever than most rappers I am hearing these days. He represents a regular guy, that is not concerned with flash and flossin’. He loves hip-hop with every ounce of his body so he is much more concerned with spittin great lyrics than all of the other stuff that usually comes with a career in this game. After working with rappers for so many years I can also say that his hard work and work ethics also set with apart from the rest. He is loyal and very dedicated to his family and friends. When you see his live show, you will see for yourself why he stands out from the rest.

SM: You rub shoulders with many of hip-hop’s elite, what made Cognito someone worthy of your backing?

VB: Listen to his music and you will know but it was also his intelligence. He was already smart about the business and he was hard working and very honest with me. He did not have some crazy ego. He was as good, if not better than some of the other (rap-stars) that I helped throughout the years. I just could not turn my back on his level of talent.

SM: You’ve worked with Strange a lot in the past few years. What do you attribute to their success? How do you think Cognito will be a good fit?

VB: This is plain, simple and easy to say……THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL-TIME, TECH N9NE AND THE GREATEST MANAGER OF ALL-TIME TRAVIS O’GUIN. With TECH’S music and the work ethic, professionalism, creativity and mind of Travis they are unstoppable. Tech has been through a lot through the years, he has been connected to some of the greatest minds and people in the business so he has learned a lot along the way but the education that he has received at Strange just makes him stronger and stronger with every release. I work with EVERY label and there is NONE FINER THAN STRANGE MUSIC. These guys know what they are doing and they do it with style, creativity and a hell of a lot of HARD WORK. No other rapper is touring as much as TECH. When one tour ends, another starts and people are there ready to buy ticket after ticket because his live show is the VERY BEST YOU WILL SEE. Cognito will fit in just fine because he can keep up with the tour schedule & give an amazing show to the THOUSANDS OF TECH AND STRANGE MUSIC FANS. The Strange Music logo has become a major force in Hip Hop and I think they may be extending that to other genres in the near future. They are selective about who they sign and I am glad, proud and ecstatic that they have brought Cognito into their elite roster of artists. When you see their logo on a piece of music you can bank on it being great. They are the new face of the business!

Cognito ‘Outcast’ Music Video [Video]

The music video for Cognito’s debut single “Outcast” from his Strange Music debut, Automatic, has hit the web. Directed by Dan Hedman (director of the Brotha Lynch Hung video trilogy) of Liquid 9, the video features Cognito in an Independence, Missouri junkyard over imagery of pictures of him and his grandfather. The shoot was done during the coldest day of the year so far. Cognito, being from California, probably had a little getting used to when it came to the seven-degree-weather, but after coming this far, did you really think that would stop him from making a dope video?  Check it out here or watch below.

Check out some of the behind-the-scenes photos taken during the “Outcast” music video shoot!
